Самое главное изменение, добавка интересного инструмента для выделения объектов, основанного на алгоритме SIOX (Simple Interactive Foreground eXtraction).

Интерфейс пользователя:

• Убрана строка меню из панели инструментов, основным элементом интерфейса теперь выступает окно редактирования изображения. При начальном запуске без параметров, вместо панели инструментов теперь появляется окно с пустым изображением. Меню "Диалоги" переименовано в "Окна";
• Вспомогательные панели инструментов и диалоги стали более компактными, их теперь можно размещать поверх дока, фиксировать позицию и скрывать с панели задач оконного менеджера;
• Полосы прокрутки теперь позволяют выходить за края изображения, что повысило удобство выполнения операций с угловыми частями и краями картинки;
• Сохраняется история использования элементов интерфейса, позволяя быстро вернуть какое-то закрытое окно;
• Возможность изменения масштаба, через ввод уровня масштабирования в статусной строке.

Утилиты, фильтры и плагины:

• Совмещены инструменты свободного и многоугольного выделения областей, допускается сочетание сегментов обоих типов выделения;
• Возможность динамического изменения параметров кисти, выбирается сочетание размера, цвета, плотности и прозрачности с такими параметрами, как нажим, скорость и случайный фактор;
• Возможность определения области ввода текста на холсте, в которой будет осуществляться функция автоматического переноса на новую строку, включая изменение переносов при изменении размера блока;
• Упрощение работы с узкими прямоугольными выделениями в таких инструментах как кадрирование;
• При перемещении объектов, чтобы не сбиться с прямой, возможна фиксация горизонтальной или вертикальной составляющей;
• В инструментах рисования расширены возможности по размыванию. В инструменте размазывания теперь можно менять размер кисти;
• При выделении и перемещении прямоугольных областей отображается центр данной области;
• Возможность сохранения часто используемых настроек цветокоррекции;
• Возможность перемещения настроек из блока "Яркость-Контраст" в блок "Уровни", из блока "Уровни" в блок "Кривые";
• В инструментах трансформации можно задавать степень прозрачности в окне предварительного просмотра;
• Плагин для создания скриншотов теперь может запечатлевать позицию курсора мыши на экране;
• В плагин Пламя добавлено 22 новых вида огня;
• В файловых диалогах, подобных загрузке кистей, добавлена возможность рекурсивного поиска файлов;
• Полностью переписан PSD плагин, добавлена поддержка ICC-профилей.

Экспериментальный частичный переход Gimp на использование GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) для управления цветами. Работа по переходу на GEGL будет продолжена при подготовке ветки GIMP 2.8, что позволит увеличить глубину цвета на канал (сейчас только 8 бит на канал ), использовать цветовую схему CMYK.
Многие виджеты портированы на использование библиотеки Cairo.
