After what seemed an eternity and with numerous delays for both technical and staffing issues, Fonality has just released the latest incarnation of its open source PBX platform, trixbox CE 2.4. What sets 2.4 apart from the previous 2.2 versions really warrants more than a simple dot-release as all of the underlieing technologies are completely different. Operating System

One problem with trixbox CE 2.x is the lack of hardware support for current systems, especially newer Dell platforms. The vast majority of this has been solved because trixbox CE 2.4 is now based on top of the latest CentOS 5.1 kernel. This now provides support for a much larger number of motherboards, network cards and components such as hardware raid controllers. CentOS 5.1 also has high resolution timers built into the kernel so the need for hardware timers on the PCI bus should no longer be required, this is promised to make systems running in VMware or XEN sessions work much better.



Asterisk 1.4

While many people thought Fonality should jump right onto the Asterisk 1.4 bandwagon, with the release of trixbox CE 2.4, it is the only installable option. While there are still reports from large call centers saying that Asterisk 1.4 does not perform as fast as the previous 1.2 version, the stability issues seem to have been pretty well solved in current versions. Some of the additional benefits of Asterisk 1.4 include:

Specific enhancements featured in Asterisk 1.4 include:
Generic Jitter Buffer- improves the quality of a call during network congestion.
Asterisk Extension Language Version 2- simplifies programming and dial plan configuration.
T.38- allows IP FAXes to pass through the server.
Jabber/Jingle/GoogleTalk- supports compatibility with all of these networks.
Increased language capabilities- offers new language capabilities in English, Spanish and French as well as new sounds and improved sentence structure support.
Unified Messaging- integrates voicemail, email, and fax into a central mailbox where users can send, retrieve and manage all of their messages using any communication device.
Whisper Paging- allows for selective, pre-programmed call interruption with controlled volume levels and muting capabilities.

FreePBX 2.3

The GUI used to manage PBX functions is FreePBX 2.3 which doesn't have many more features than the previous version but the new architecture allows for simplified updates and features the ability to send email on different trunk failures now.



Web MeetMe 3

This is a vast improvement over the simple conference room monitor from the past. With Web MeetMe 3 you have total control over users, conference rooms, scheduling, and much more. This turns the system into a very powerful conference room management system.



Echo Cancelation

trixbox CE 2.4 comes standard with OSLEC (Open Source Line Echo Cancelation) which is a very powerful software echo cancelation system. This is a major step in providing a software solution to help eliminate echo problems for users.



FAX Support

Faxing has never been a priorty for the trixbox team until very recently. With the help of the user community they have pretty much solved faxing issues for most people. Due to codec translation, faxing is still not quite usable over VoIP circuits, but users with analog or digital circuits should have very good results now.



Summary

It only takes a few minutes of reading through the trixbox.org forums to see that the overall reaction to trixbox CE 2.4 is more than positive. Many people are calling this the best release of trixbox ever. Tons of small nagging issues have been fixed, lots of the code has been cleaned up, the interface is looking better than ever, overall its simple a better product than ever before.

Trixbox 2.6 Beta 1

This is the first beta of the upcoming 2.6 release. Do not use this on production systems yet. There are bound to be some bugs in the dashboard and possibly zaptel.
