We are pleased to announce the Zenwalk 4.8 RC release. Thanks to our devoted users, many bugs have been fixed and many improvements have been done since the beta release. As an example, SLIM, the very light desktop manager, has been modified to handle custom commands such as halt, reboot, hibernate, per user keyboard and locale configuration. KTSUSS (Keep The Su Simple, Stupid), replaces the well-known gksu, however a wrapper is provided for backward compatibility. Many packages have been updated: Linux kernel 2.6.22.7, Pidgin 2.2.0, Transmission 0.82, ra73 support has been added to wpa-supplicant 0.5.8. At the same time, OpenOffice.org, its localization packages and most other packages provided in [extra] repository were kept up to date as well.

Вышла в свет новая версия tgz-based дистрибутива Zenwalk - 4.8. Среди новшеств - ядро 2.6.22.9 собранное с частотой scheduler'а в 1 кГц, Firefox and Thunderbird заменены на IceWeasel и IceDove. В extra репозиториях теперь наличиствует KDE 3.5.7 и OpenOffice 2.3.0. Много других изменений. Zenwalk - это производная от Slackware, сильно доработанная с Xfce в качестве DE по умолчанию. Позиционируется как мультимедийная - девелоперская система.

Zenwalk Linux 5.0 has been released! Version 5.0 is the first Zenwalk release to introduce the Freedesktop HAL system. Noticeable enhancements found in version 5.0 are numerous software updates, including the latest X.Org 7.3 suite of X servers, drivers, fonts and other software. Other updates include the latest version of the Iceweasel web browser, the Icedove email client and hundreds more! WiFi support in Zenwalk 5.0 is probably the very best of what you can expect to find in the GNU/Linux world. The modern and powerful Wicd WiFi browser replaces WiFi Radar, while the Intel wireless device firmware is provided out of the box. Following tradition, Zenwalk's default desktop environment is based on Xfce, which is now at version 4.4.2.

The long awaited Zenwalk 5.2 is out in beta. It has been four months since the last release and it's time to brush off the packages. What's new? The package manager, netpkg 'new generation' v4, has been completely rewritten in Perl-GTK and several new features have been added, making this already great application even greater. MPlayer is provided with the latest dvdnav (DVD menus support). Powerthend adds CPU scaling daemon and control script. The suspend and resume system has been improved. What's updated? As usual for each release, the desktop has been refreshed with new artwork. Almost all packages have been updated or rebuilt, including the Linux kernel 2.6.25.4 and Xfce 4.4.2. The update also takes care of a number of security fixes.

We are proud to announce that Zenwalk GNOME 5.2 beta is ready for testing. Based on Zenwalk current, it features the latest stable GNOME 2.22.3 desktop, customized with beautiful Zenwalk artwork. Also included are Linux kernel 2.6.25.4, the latest X.Org 7.3 suite of X servers and the next generation of the Netpkg package manager. Zenwalk GNOME follows the 'one application per task' Zenwalk philosophy and provides a complete programming environment for coders. Changes since the alpha version: all known problems and bugs have been fixed; it should work under VirtualBox now; Evince has taken its place in the ISO again; the Metacity compositor is now turned off by default.

The first beta of Zenwalk Linux 5.4 is ready for testing. This beta version is a good preview of the upcoming Zenwalk 5.4, as we are mostly waiting for Xfce 4.6 final. The most important changes: Linux kernel 2.6.27.10 with gspca (supports many USB webcams); Xfce 4.6-beta2; faster boot; PAM authentication has been added to the system; wicd has become the main network configuration tool; improved suspend and hibernate with Xfce power manager; new Netpkg with orphan dependencies and 'offline operation' support; new Zenpanel with integrated disk manager, WiFi and wired network manager; Gksu keyring based desktop granting system; new artwork; many new applications.

Zenwalk 6.0 RC1 is available. Considering the size of the changelog, which probably makes it impossible to upgrade directly from Zenwalk 5.2 (due to the number of new packages and features), we decided that the version number should jump to 6.0. We are proud to announce the 6th major version of Zenwalk Linux. This release comes with the biggest changelog in the history of the project to offer many new features and optimizations. We spent the 2 last month polishing the desktop around the new Xfce 4.6, making sure that this brand new version is well integrated into Zenwalk 6.0. We also replaced GNOME Office with our lightweight and optimized version of OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, split in two packages. The Totem movie player is also part of the adventure, replacing MPlayer, which is still available from our growing package repository.
